Grayson’s Additional Continental Regiment

Aut liber, aut nullus

Grayson’s Colours

NOTE: These colours are a MODERN interpretation based on historical examples. We have not yet found a record of the colours used by Grayson’s Additional Continental Regiment. If we should find a record, we will adjust accordingly. In the meantime, we took historical elements used for other Regimental colours and designed our own approximation of what the Grayson’s colours could have looked like.

  1. General Design: The general design of the flag was based on known Virginia flags from the Revolutionary War. There seem to be at least 3 known flags (pale blue, yellow, and a beige that was probably originally red) that have a scroll with “REGIMENT” on it and fringe. We have retained that basic design, including the space before “REGIMENT” where the regimental number would go, and added a new scroll with “Grayson’s.” We have mirrored that on the opposite side and added the motto “Aut Liber, Aut Nullus.”
  2. 13-stars and Color: Grayson’s Additional Continental Regiment was not a state regiment and fell directly under General George Washington. As such, we have placed his personal flag in the upper corner, as well as adopted the color his flag may have been when it was new. A similar field can also be seen on the 3rd Virginia flag.
  3. The Motto: In the 11 November 1774 minutes of the Prince William Independent Company of Cadets, of which William Grayson was Chairman, set forth the resolution that their motto would be “Aut Liber, Aut Nullus.” We have retained that for Grayson’s Regiment.
