What to Expect
What to expect if you join Grayson’s Additional Continental Regiment:
- We currently can manage 3 new members a year. We want to be able to give you personal attention to help you acquire your kit, learn the drill, flesh out your impression, and help you understand how we approach the public. We can’t do this well if we recruit too many people at a time. As the unit grows and our members advance, we hope to increase our recruiting.
- We have a 2-year probationary period. This allows you to evaluate us and for us to evaluate you. Not every unit is right for every reenactor. The probationary period gives you a realistic amount of time to acquire the necessary basics of your kit, find and learn your impression, and spend time with us. As a probationary member, we expect you to participate in at least 75% of our annual events.
- We expect everyone to have an impression, even the soldiers. It doesn’t have to be a complicated impression, but you should have some idea of who the 18th-century version of yourself is. We can help you find an impression that fits you and your interests.
- We expect you to do research. We can help you find information, but you may find something other people have not.
- You should expect reenacting to be expensive. Clothing, muskets, sundry items, and (most importantly) unit insurance costs.
- We expect you to strive for accuracy. None of us can be 100% authentic. It’s simply not possible in the modern world. But we do expect you to try and to continue to improve.
- Don’t expect to join and be fully kitted within a week or even a month. Acquiring items takes time and effort. Be patient with the process and use the time to learn and improve.
